Can you explain the difference between pure perfume, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and eau de cologne?

The difference is the amount of concentration of oils in the fragrances. The highest concentration is pure perfume (parfum). Then EDP, EDT, and EDC.

Perfume: This is the most concentrated formulation and is also very expensive. They contain 15-30% aromatic components, and last the longest when applied to skin. They normally come in small bottles.

Eau de Parfum: This is also the most fragrance containing 10-15% aromatic components, but still has long lasting characteristics. It is less expensive than pure perfume.

Eau de Toilette: This is less expensive than eau de perfume, but very popular. It normally has 5-15% aromatic compounds. It usually lasts for 2 to 4 hours

Cologne or Eau de Cologne: It originated in Cologne, Germany. Today it is a generic term that defines a class of formulation by its typical concentration of 2-5%. Cologne products are made for men and women. It is lighter than EDT and usually lasts for couple hours.

Can you tell me about fragrance notes?

Fragrances are comprised of many different scents, also called notes. Top notes are very light, they are recognised immediately upon application of perfume and last about five to ten minutes. Common fragrance top notes include citrus, light fruits and herbs. Middle notes or the heart notes make an appearance once the top notes evaporate, and last last up to an hour or more. Common fragrance middle notes include geranium, rose lemongrass, lavender and Jasmine. Bottom notes or base notes have heavier ingredients and last for several hours. Common fragrance base notes include cedarwood, sandalwood, vanilla, ambur and musk. A fragrance will not be appealing without the combination of all three notes. But all notes together create perfect scents.

Is there any difference between a splash and a spray?

No, There is no difference in the fragrance; just the way of application.

Do you wear perfume on clothes or the body?

Perfumes are best worn on the body, generally on the pulse points, for instance, inside of the wrists, back of the neck, behind the ears, etc. Your body’s warmth makes the perfume blossom to the fullest. Wearing perfumes on clothes will not let the heat get to the pulse points, and hence the much-desired lingering effect is lessened.

How can I make my fragrance last longer?

The secret to making your perfume and cologne last longer lies in fragrance layering. You can build up layers of scent on the skin by using different forms of the same fragrance, such as dry oil spray or massage oil after showering on damp skin, then spray perfume spray and a couple of dabs from a perfume roll on. It’ll reinforce the impact of the other and increase the life of your favorite scent.

How do I choose a perfume I’ll enjoy?

It can be difficult. Allure magazine once complained, “Finding the right fragrance is almost as hard as finding the right man. Sometimes, you may feel that there is no logic behind choosing a perfume because your sense of smell is so emotional. Still, the perfume you enjoy most will probably belong to just one or two of the fourteen different fragrance families. Like most good things, it takes a little time and effort to find a new perfume that is right for you. Also, guys can go on and check out our men’s essential guide for choosing and applying cologne along with our other blogs; many of your questions will be answered there.

What is the best way to try a fragrance?

There can be many ways to do that, but we recommend applying a few drops or lightly spraying to your wrist or the back of your hand. Don’t just sniff because perfume comes to life only on your skin. Also, wait a few moments as the fragrance needs time to bloom on your skin, and let the notes ‘talk’ to you.

Why do some fragrances seem to last longer than others?

It depends on your skin type, i.e., how oily or dry your skin is — is an essential factor in how long your fragrance will last. The pH level of your skin is another factor which affects how long fragrance notes, or the scents you notice after applying perfume, will continue. Keep in mind that the pH level also determines how each ingredient in your perfume or cologne will react when you wear it. Usually, people with dry skin will notice that fragrance lasts for a shorter interval as compared to people with oily skin, because if your skin is oily, it has moisture that holds the fragrance longer. If your skin is dry, moisturizing it before applying perfume will help it last longer.

What’s the difference between men & women’s fragrances?

Well, there aren’t any. Besides, gendering fragrances goes back to the ’50s to the introduction of mass-marketed fragrances that mainly targeted women. If you go back to the original creation of fragrance up until this point, you’ll discover that fragrances were for everyone. There’s also a cultural element to how we view fragrances, as in most of the western world, men often wear deep, warm, and woody scents and women soft, floral, or sweet fragrances. But you should always go with what your nose likes, and that’s what you should wear.

How much and what type of perfume should I wear?

Well, less is always best because your perfume should never dominate your surroundings. We suggest a light, fresh floral fragrance for summer warmer months. As increased body temperature causes perfumes to expand, and the scent becomes more potent. During winter, the opposite happens. So, build your fragrance wardrobe and always choose perfumes to meet your moods & occasions.

Do seasonal scents exist? Are some better for winter than summer?

In summer, you may notice that your fragrance seems ‘stronger’ or more overpowering. This is precisely why brands sometimes offer lighter versions of best-selling scents for the summer. Logically, lighter, airy scents are associated with hot climates and woody, heavier scents with cold. This approach simply comes from the feeling of comfort of a light and fresh scent when the weather is already heavy with heat & humidity. Some people prefer heavier, comforting, more full-bodied, almost ‘cocooning’ scents in the winter – but again, we recommend that you follow your tastes and preferences. At Awesome Perfumes, we have more precious fragrances that we love to rediscover at around the time when we reach for our tights, our socks (and vests!), switching to airier perfumes for the warmer months.

Does Rubbing Perfumed Wrists Deteriorate the Perfume?

It is more of a myth than reality because the mechanical force of rubbing or the heat released from it is way too less to degrade the molecules of the fragrances. On the other hand, the stimulation may accelerate the diffusion of top notes, and alter a bit of the experience.

How do I choose perfume as a gift?

Well, perfumes are not only a versatile item that has many possible uses – like wearing or creating an ambiance in your home, but it’s also a heartfelt gift, as well.
